In addition to being a fun activity for kindergartens, Chinese paper-cutting also has a long history and profound cultural connotations originated from the farming culture. Meanwhile, interactive experience is not only about user actions, but also involves their subsequent cognitive processes, such as the perception of the interactive system, the reflection on their presence and the environment, and the understanding of the behaviors as well as subjects in the experience. With all the components connected, an interactive experience will give audiences a space to explore, reflect, connect, and understand. Following research on the impact of interactive experience on human cognition, this project is investigating how interaction design can promote people's understanding of the marginalized traditional culture on a different level than before, specifically in this case of Chinese paper cutting, how the sense of presence and multiple layers of feedback can help audiences understand the subject better.
The whole design here is centered on its core spirit of using the special language of cutting to hide infinite possibilities between a small piece of paper.
The Core Spirit
Contents
The contents arranged within the fan shape have four categories, including patterns, techniques, contexts and spirits. They are in order from nearest to farthest, so that as the user goes deeper into this fan area, he or she will learn about Chinese paper cutting from outside to inside.
Symbols
Each symbol is extracted from the repetitive and representative units in the corresponding paper-cuts. The repetition happens a lot, which is also one characteristic of Chinese paper cutting.
